Offline AI on iPhone is real: you can chat with an AI model with no internet at all, as long as the app runs the model on your device instead of in the cloud. Here is how AI without internet works, what to set up while you still have Wi-Fi, and what to expect once the signal is gone.

Why most AI apps stop working offline

ChatGPT, Claude and most AI chat apps treat your phone as a thin client. Your message travels to a data center, a big model answers there, and the reply travels back. Every step needs a live connection.

That is fine until you lose it: on a flight, in a basement, on a mountain. Then a cloud AI app doesn’t slow down. It just stops.

How offline AI on iPhone works

Set up before you go offline

Step 1: Install the app

Step 2: Download a model over Wi-Fi

Open the model library and download a model. Sizes run from 288 MB to 3.6 GB, so use Wi-Fi if you can. Priobs recommends a model that fits your iPhone and hides ones it doesn’t have the memory for.

Step 3: Test it

Before you board, switch on airplane mode and send a test message. If you get an answer, you’re ready.

What still needs internet (and what doesn’t)

Here is exactly where the line sits.

Needs internet:

• Downloading the app and app updates
• Downloading a model (or downloading it again after you delete it)
• Subscription checks, now and then. If one can’t run because you are offline, Pro subscribers keep access for 3 days.
• Optional connected features, all off by default: web search (your own Brave key), Telegram delivery, and MCP servers that connect Priobs to services like Notion or Linear

Works without internet:

• Chatting with any model you’ve downloaded
• Switching between downloaded models
• Voice dictation, which uses on-device speech recognition
• Attachments: summarizing a PDF, or asking about a Word file, a spreadsheet or the text in a photo
• On-device tools like calendar, reminders, contacts and Health
• Searching your chat history and attachments
• Apple Intelligence, on iPhones that support it

So once setup is done, your everyday chats don’t need a connection. Only the extras you choose to switch on do.

Offline AI for documents

This is where AI without internet gets useful. Attach a PDF, a Word document, an Excel sheet, a PowerPoint deck or a photo of a page, and Priobs extracts the text on your iPhone. Then ask for a summary, a list of action points or an answer to a specific question. It all happens in airplane mode.

A few things to know. Photos are read with on-device text recognition, so the model works with the text in a scan, receipt or screenshot. It doesn’t “see” the image. And very long documents can go beyond what a phone-sized model holds at once, so ask about one section at a time if a file is huge.

When offline AI matters

Flights. Hours with no Wi-Fi are good hours to write, plan or think something through. A local model works the same at 10,000 meters.

Travel and remote areas. Hiking, rural roads, trips where roaming data is expensive. On-device AI takes the signal out of the equation.

Dead zones. Basements, lifts, trains through tunnels. Ordinary places lose signal all the time.

Switching off on purpose. Some people go offline to focus and still want an assistant.

Data caps. Local chats use no mobile data once the model is on your phone.

Privacy comes with it

Offline and private come from the same design. Every answer is generated on your iPhone, with or without signal, and your prompts never go to a Priobs server. There’s no Priobs account. • Smallest download: Qwen 2.5 0.5B at 288 MB, or LFM2 1.2B at 663 MB.
• Solid all-rounder: Gemma 3 1B or Llama 3.2 3B.
• The most capable: Qwen 3 4B, a 2.3 GB download that needs 2.9 GB of RAM.
• No download at all: Apple Intelligence, if your iPhone supports it.
